The Story of Cynthia the Sea Lion
The Cynthia the Sea Lion logo for The Hay was inspired by a story about Peter Hay. When serving as Chief Marshal for Bobby Jones during the 1929 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach, the crowd following Jones began running between shots. Hay restored order with his assertive commands that were said to have "shaken the sea lions." The visual inspiration came from a 1938 photo of a trained sea lion taken during a promotional shoot at Del Monte when Hay was the head professional.
